The Student Journey: From Red Deer to Sheridan College

Jill’s story begins in Red Deer, Alberta, where she was born and raised. With a dream to pursue performing arts, she made the bold decision to attend Sheridan College in Oakville, Ontario. There, she earned an Honors Bachelor of Music Theatre, a program that’s unique in Canada for offering a degree in musical theatre performance.

However, Jill’s transition from Alberta to Ontario wasn’t all smooth sailing.

"Moving to a new city is always tough,"

She admits, recalling how the excitement of university life quickly turned into feelings of loneliness. But over time, she formed deep friendships, some of which continue to be a significant part of her life today.

The Creative Struggle: Embracing Uncertainty After Graduation

After graduating in 2019, Jill faced the reality many graduates experience: the transition from school to the "real world" wasn’t as glamorous as she’d imagined. Despite graduating with honors, opportunities didn’t come knocking on her door.

“I thought I’d step out of school and immediately land a role, but nothing happened.”

Jill then tried her hand at various jobs, including working in a greenhouse and teaching fitness, but she always felt the pull to create art. Together with friends, she decided to produce Art Pop-Up events, where local artists could showcase their work in a collaborative and supportive environment. The events became a vital outlet for Jill’s creative energy, and she found joy in bringing artists together, even during uncertain times.

Starting Fresh in Vancouver: Finding Home and Community

Jill’s move to Vancouver was another leap of faith. After experiencing a series of sublets in Toronto and dealing with the uncertainty of COVID-19, she found herself back home in Alberta, unsure of her next steps. It wasn’t until a visit to her brother in Vancouver in 2020 that she decided to make the city her permanent home.

Living with her brother on his couch, Jill spent her days exploring Vancouver on foot, finding solace in long walks around the city.

"I didn’t have a job, a place to live, or many friends, but I loved it here."

Her curiosity and love for exploration made her fall in love with the city, and it wasn’t long before she decided to stay.

Building Connections Through Community

In Vancouver, Jill discovered the power of community. She joined The Outsiders, a cold water therapy group that meets weekly for cold dips in the ocean.

"It’s a great way to meet people who are also searching for connection."

The group became a cornerstone of her social life in Vancouver, showing her that even in a big city, forming deep, organic relationships is possible.

Through this group and her art projects, Jill learned the importance of putting herself out there and being open to new experiences.

"Don’t be afraid to join in," she advises.

"Ask questions, get involved, and just go for it. The connections you make will be so rewarding."

Art Pop-Up in Vancouver: A New Chapter

Jill’s most recent venture in Vancouver was the first Art Pop-Up event held in the city. After a few years of hiatus, Jill teamed up with a friend to bring the event back. The show brought together creatives to share their work, and the turnout was incredible.

"It was a beautiful experience to see everyone come together and share their art," Jill reflects.

The Art Pop-Up project was a reminder of the power of collaboration and community in the creative world.

“We were all in the same boat, trying to make art again. It was scary, but it was also the most fulfilling thing to do,” Jill explains.

The event was a testament to the strength of Vancouver’s creative community and Jill’s ability to turn passion into action.
