From Manila to Metro Vancouver: How Dave Built a New Life (and Friend Group) in Canada
Dave didn’t plan on moving to Canada—he just gave it a shot. One impulsive decision, a fast visa process, and a 16-hour flight later, he landed in Vancouver with family nearby and a fresh start waiting for him.
Now studying psychology at Columbia College, Dave quickly found that adjusting to life here wasn’t always smooth. Between cold winters, new slang, and job hunting, it’s been a ride. But as he puts it,
“It’s hard, but it’s not the end. Just trust your wings.”
Finding His People
What helped the most? Community. Dave joined Vanstu Events in May 2023—just wanting to meet people—and ended up forming a whole new social circle.
Started by working coat check and ticket booths.
Met tons of students, made real friends.
One invite led to five new connections.
“Events were just the start. After that, we’d chill, eat, and hang out outside of them too. It just grew.”
The Struggle Is Real (Especially with Jobs)
Getting a job as an international student? Tough. Dave shared how it took him six months to land his first role. The biggest hurdle?
“Do you have Canadian experience?”
Without local experience, he couldn’t land the sales role he wanted—but he said yes to a housekeeping job instead. That willingness opened doors. When he was laid off during winter, he stayed in touch and got rehired. It all came down to one thing: leaving a good impression.
“Always leave on good terms. You never know when someone will call you back.”
Favorite Spots Around Vancouver
For students new to the city, Dave dropped some must-visits:
☕ Coffee:
Breka Bakery & Café – Open 24/7, big sandwiches, solid coffee, good vibes.
🌊 Chill Spots:
Lighthouse Park in North Van – “I saw an orca there. Just sitting and drinking coffee. Wild.”
🛍️ Mall Hangouts:
Metrotown – Groceries, window shopping, or spending your next paycheck on shoes. Everything’s there.
🚌 Transport Tip:
“Transit is key. Just bear with the unpleasantries—you’ll save money and still get everywhere.”
Dave’s Study-Life Advice
Balance doesn’t mean working late and cramming on Sundays. Dave’s trick?
Do assignments as soon as you get them.
Ask for feedback early.
Separate school stress from work stress.
“Finish school stuff early, so you can enjoy the rest. Even sleep in class if you have to. Kidding… kind of.”
Words to Live By
Dave wrapped the chat with one powerful reminder:
“Be kind—even when others aren’t. And trust your wings. You’re going to get there.”
