On the first episode of Vancouver Network Podcast, host Alejandro Cerecedo spoke with Luis, an international student from Yucatán, Mexico, who shared his experiences adapting to life in Vancouver while pursuing a dual degree in political science and economics at UBC.
Luis’s academic journey took him from high school abroad to studying in France before landing at UBC. He described the campus as “eclectic and alive,” highlighting its diversity and vibrant community as key to his enriched learning experience. Alongside his studies, Luis worked part-time in a café, balancing the high cost of living in Vancouver with his academic commitments.
Adjusting to Vancouver came with challenges, from the rainy climate to the differences in cultural and social life. Luis appreciated the city’s rich food scene, though he noted the lack of authentic Mexican cuisine. Above all, he emphasized the importance of building connections, which he sees as the cornerstone of growth as a student and professional.
Looking ahead, Luis hopes to stay in Vancouver, contributing to the city’s growth and tackling urban challenges through his passion for politics and design. His advice for fellow students? Embrace the city, make connections, and explore all it has to offer.
